Because ACA plans must cover everyone, their costs vary based on several factors, including:

Age and gender
Household size
Household income (ACA savings and subsidies are based on your estimated Modified Adjusted Gross Income, or MAGI, for the coverage year)
On the other side of the healthcare market are private, state-regulated plans. These are often designed for self-employed professionals, business owners, or individuals who find ACA plans too costly. Many private carriers use medical underwriting, which means they assess your health before offering coverage. These plans typically cover only low-risk, healthy individuals, allowing them to offer stronger benefits at more affordable prices compared to ACA plans.
Some private plans do accept people with pre-existing conditions but expect higher premiums since they’re taking on greater risk. Simply put—when risk goes up, so does cost.
